5 Principles of Fair Trade Coffee:
1. Democratic Organization
Producers belong to cooperatives or associations that are transparent and democratically controlled by membership.
2. A Fair Price
Farmers have a voice in setting the prices
3. Direct and Lasting Relationships
Importers purchase coffee directly from producer cooperatives rather than from single owner estatesor brokers.
4. Prefinancing
There
are many costly steps between harvest and export. To impower grower
coops to handle all the costs. Fair trade importers amd roasters agree
to pay up to 60 % of the purchase price during harvest, before the
coffee is shiped.
5. Environmental Stewardship
Growers practice integrated pest management and include ecological sustainability in planning.
